Slow Home Report – June 27, 2007

This week the topic is making a difference. We talk about co-housing as a small scale alternative to standard suburban development and the website worldchanging.com with its message of empowered solutions. We have the second of our SlowHomeTV interviews with Tim McDonald and Howard Steinberg, of the Philadelphia firm Onion Flats as well as an interview with Felix Schneider who talks about his line of Swiss made fibre cement garden planters. In Folio we have 6 of these Green Form planters as well as four new housing projects by the Pittsburgh based architects Edge Studio.

Voices of Cohousing – Building Villages in the City Ιανουαρίου 7, 2008

Trailer from the film  ”Voices of Cohousing – Building Villages in the City”

AWARD WINNER at the 34th Ekotopfilm festival 2007. One of today’s biggest paradoxes, is that half of the world’s population lives in city, yet many do not know their neighbours… Imagine 20 or 30 households: each has its own dwelling, but they all share some common rooms and activities. In that sense, cohousing makes urban life easier and more fun for both adults and children, while preserving a high level of privacy. This documentary, based on interviews conducted in 14 cohousings shows that another city life is possible! For more info www.notsocrazy.net

The World Economic Forum*, where the world leaders gather yearly since 1979, is meeting in late January. They asked citizens to reply with a video to the question: “What one thing do you think that countries, companies or individuals must do to make the world a better place in 2008?“. I replied with the short trailer of my documentary on cohousing because, if there is no one single answer, cohousing does make urban life better! And as UN writes over 50% of world population live in cities since 2007…
I think we have a chance to bring cohousing to be discussed at the WEF because most of people’s answers are too broad and hard to apply in reality. The cohousing is something focused and already put in practice by many!
Please forward to your community and vote for it (deadline 20th January) so that the cohousing issue is discussed at the next World Economic Forum.

* The World Economic Forum is a very criticised summit as it gathers the world business and political leaders who tend to appear “green” and “social” whereas what really matters to them is to be more competitive and make more profit. Yet I do believe that it is important to use this media channel to speak about the advantages of living in a cohousing.
